Agate stones, otherwise known as “akik” in Indonesia, have a very dedicated community of collectors and sellers in the country from a long history of mysticism, as many believe the stones contain various powers or charms.
Akik, or aqeeq means quartz in Arabic, and agate in Turkish, however in the context of rings usually refers to a ring set with a chalcedony stone. Well-known types of chalcedony are carnelian, agate, and onyx. It is considered a semi-precious gemstone.
An akik ring also has religious importance in Islam as it is considered sunnah to wear one. The prophet Muhammad wore a carnelian / akik ring set with silver on his right hand as a commemoration of the removal of idols from the Grand Mosque in Mecca in 630 CE. To this day many Muslims do the same, including both Shia and Sunni clergy.
One of the most famous and common among the agate is the Black Onyx, believed by its collectors to have healing properties that can absorb and transform negative energy surrounding its wearer into a positive aura, the same way that the color black absorbs sunlight.
The community also believes that the Black Onyx can help with developing emotional and physical strength and stamina, useful in times of stress, confusion or grief.
In Feng Shui, these black stones are believed to have the power of protect and ground. It is believed to have the ability to support social skills, and helps the wearer to be well-liked professionally. It is also believed to bring good luck financially, and reduce negative energy.
The Anggur Bulan, or so called “Moon Grape,” due to it commonly being cut into a grape-like shape, and its colors, have similar properties to the Black Onyx, in that it can also heal the wearer and provide positive mental and physical energy.
The Anggur Bulan, is a Chalcedony, it’s usually white in color, but it also comes in green or purple, like the fruit. In white, the Chalcedony represents purity and prosperity, and wearers usually seek the stone to rid themselves of anxiety and fear.
Another property that the collectors believe that this stone has is that it can bring a peace of mind, and distance the wearer from evil dreams, that usually come from an anxiety riddled subconscious. Wearers believe that the Anggur Bulan has a natural energy that can lead to a path of compassion, fairness, and honesty.
For the wearer, the Sulemani Hakik brings focus, and streamlines a person’s mindset to his goals. It is believed that by wearing the stone, a person might perform better in his workspace, as the stone clears the mind of unnecessary thoughts, and focuses it on the task at hand.
Some believe that the Sulemani brings balance between the heart and the mind, which improves judgement, unclouds it. The Sulemani has also been believed to be good for maintaining relationships and even marriages.
