Toyota’s Elite Crossover Troop

Nearly a year after the launch of the Toyota CHR in Jakarta, the car that is valued at almost half a billion rupiah has not been seen gliding on the streets of Jakarta. Toyota does not burden the C-HR, which stands for Compact High Rider, with high sales figures considering the price of this car equals to Toyota Fortuner or Toyota All New Voxy, which offer larger dimensions and capacity. GlobeAsia has the opportunity to test drive this car for several days to explore the streets of the capital.


C-HR’s overall exterior appearance surely looks muscular, modern and more sporty than the ordinary crossover. The impression of Sports car comes from the coupe gene thanks to the rear door handle camouflaged near the C-pillar, so as if there is no second-row door.

The design of its face is a resemblance of Stormtroopers, which is fierce and intimidating but elegant at the same time thanks to the lack of complicated lines like other cars in its class. The dual-tone alloy design is also very dashing, unfortunately, the one introduced at the launch only has single tone wheels with a less attractive design. The headlights narrow like a cynical look, combined with sharp body sculptures like diamonds give the appearance of a traditional sports car. Combined with a honeycomb patterned lower grille impressive tough accents as a crossover should be.

The rear is no less interesting, the design of the taillights and the curvature of the trunk door are sporty as if the jet plane’s tail can emit great power. The thing we really like is the appearance of the side and the muscle on the fenders on the wheels, it looks like a very powerful sports car.


Entering the cabin, the dominance of Licorice Brown’s color gives a luxurious accent but still sportsmanship. The dashboard design is very modern complete with the presence of the AVX 7 " Head Unit (DVD, Bluetooth, USB, AUX, Weblink Application with Multi-Tasking Window), then there is also Dual Zone Auto A / C that appears with Digital Display.

Specifically for the driver’s seat, the All-New C-HR is equipped with Lumbar Support in the driver’s seat that can be operated electrically to support comfort. The cabin can accommodate five adult passengers. Surprisingly, the rest of the cabin deserves a thumbs up because from outside we thought this car was only comfortable with four adults. With the driver’s front settings as high as 175 cm, rear passengers can sit comfortably. The headroom still leaves a distance of about 8-10 cm. Although the roof design sloping towards the stern, this relief is possible due to the lower sitting position.

Toyota provides the luxury of aura in this compact SUV with diamond shapes on various interior sides, namely the rectangular diamond shape that is spread across the carport, dashboard, head unit, center cluster, steering wheel, seat and so on. This shows that Toyota wants to give its own prestige to the owner of this car. Safety features are also complete with airbags that protect from all sides, except in the rear. Plus the completeness of the three-point seat belt on all seats. Control and braking system? Just look at this list. Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD), Braking Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Hill Assist Control (HAC), Traction Control, Auto Brake Hold, Impact Absorbing Structure, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert. With all the features that are embedded, it’s no wonder the price equals the Toyota Fortuner, the All-New Voxy or even the Honda CRV. Its figure is sloping for a crossover with a height of 1.55m and a ground clearance of only 15.4 cm. Therefore according to us, the Toyota C-HR is indeed closer to the hatchback than the SUV.

Toyota C-HR Indonesia only has one engine variant, the DOHC-VVTi engine with a 2ZR-FBE code with a 1.8-liter capacity or more precisely 1,798cc, 4-cylinder. The maximum power that can be produced is 141 PS (139 HP) and peak torque of 170.6 Nm. The power is channeled to the drive wheels through a sequential Shiftmatic 7-Speed ​​CVT transmission (Continuously Variable Transmission) so that the increase in power will feel smooth.

In the trial run across Jakarta’s toll road, the Toyota C-HR was able to perform the sensation of driving unlike other crossovers in its class. The grip of the steering wheels felt balanced and stable, while at the same time provide accurate feedback on road conditions and the surrounding environment from the all-around car sensors. Lastly, the presence of a double-wishbone suspension at the rear adds the element of comfort while driving over 120km/hr.
